It is a time of war, but it’s not like any war. This is different. The enemy is different. For centuries before the Elemental worlds coexisted in peace, until the day the Portal Keeper died. At that time the keeper was human. After a time, a new Portal Keeper is born to the Fire Elementals. The invasion begins. The Fire Horde is out to scorch the entire human realm. The human population splinters into small groups as they try to survive the onslaught. Karvir and his brother, Ketyl, have pulled together a small group that takes refuge in an area surrounded by water and hidden away from the scrutinizing eyes of others. As more portals start opening up, Karvir and his brother must sound the alarm and raise a force to defend the last fortress of human kind. In another part of the realm a young boy is torn between staying and fleeing. The young boy’s step-mother convinces him to come with her and head to the sea, where they should be safe from the Fire Horde. As they travel this young man soon discovers his pregnant step-mother is soon to deliver and this presents another set of dangers that will force him to grow up sooner than he wants to.

The Land of Ash is a fascinating read with a strong story line, well developed characters that will keep you turning the pages to find out what’s going to happen next. Although there are a few slow parts, the over all pace of the book is gripping. Hopefully the next book in the series will be out soon. If you enjoy fantasy in the same vein as The Chronicle of Narnia then you’ll have to put this book on your must read list for sure. — Steven Macon
